WebFeb 26, 2024 · According to my iPhone I have about 8000 pictures. I can't open the photos app on iMac as photolibraryd uses up all the memory. Also from googling, i see others had similar problem but with high CPU usage. The CPU usage my photolibraryd process is using is a low %, rather than the 100's% that some people were experiencing. WebI'm reasonably certain that the former is not strictly necessary for the Photos app to operate (if needed for some features); I'm slightly less certain about the latter but that isn't precisely the thrust of the question. (photolibraryd I'm aware the app needs in order to run properly at all, and so I'm not touching it).

Just quit Photos and go into Activity Monitor (inside Applications > Utilities), find a process called photolibraryd and force quit it. Then launch Photos again. Bob's your uncle.

From “Restoring from iCloud” it went to “Updating” (without any number or additional info) and stayed there for a few hours. Then it went to “Uploading x items” and it’s uploading the full library again - every single photo and video.
